Hey guys, let's start something!

Profile Information

About Me:
I am a writer, filmmaker and entrepreneur in Greensboro, NC. Married to Susan for 41 fantastic years. We have three wonderful children, all grown up and opinionated: Benjamin, Lucas and Rosie. Our entire family has worked on movies together. In fact, we all worked on the movie LAKE OF FIRE.

I'm an average Joe, generally conservative kind of guy whose wild streak rarely reveals itself anymore except in story form. LAKE OF FIRE, a feature I wrote, co-produced and directed, reflects my love of the Southern Gothic idiom. I am also a DIY author. HOME MOVIE is my book of poems and stories, THE MUSIC WE'RE BORN REMEMBERING is my first novel. It is also a southern story.
Why I'm Interested In Movies Among Friends:
MAF is more than just a sideline interest for me. It embodies a belief in how digital media can make the media arts a more accessible, fluid and powerful medium for average Joes, like myself. By joining with friends in the process, it becomes more fun and has better energy. By joining with friends who understand story, the end results should be more successful.
How I'd Like For This Site To Help Me:
Networking, encouragement, new and deeper friendships, more and greater creative output.

I just received your screenplay. Will read it tonight. They called me downstairs and all the women were saying "who was the
cute guy that delivered this?" Now, Les, you are OK - but cute is not exactly the first word that springs to mind. Then I figured out its must have been Lucas who came by. Am I right? I watched a new movie last night - "Smart People". Have you seen it? It's good but it that can get MADE, we can do this! (Of course they did have Dennis Quaid, Sarah Jessica Parker, Thomas Hayden Church and Ellen Page in the cast.) But still - it was a very small character driven movie. And if those people hadn't been in it, there would have been no "character driven" to it. - Judi

Hi, Les. I'm glad to join the group! Pretty exciting venture, huh?

Big hug for you and Susan,

Yeah, it is really exciting, yet kinda odd, because normally when I work on any kind of film project only a few people are privy to it, and here our activities are out in the open. To what end? I don't know. Maybe we'll all learn something valuable. I hope so. BIG BIG SQUEEZE FROM ME AND SUSAN!

Figure this pic is better than any I can upload of my actual self. Thanks for the invite--I'm intrigued to see what happens next....

As for steelcob, it's a combo of Steele (me) and Cobb (Jeff) minus one letter apiece. I'm sure there's some symbolism there about sacrificing a little to make something bigger and better?

I'm embarrassed at this point to talk much about my desire to write a screenplay based on Carolyn's angel poems since I've done so little. I'm not "working on" it yet, only "thinking about" it. Luke has lent me the book How to Write a Movie in 21 Days. I have also been rereading Carolyn's poems, gathering magical images when I see them, and in my imagination casting the movie with well-known actors that would be my own first choice. On Luke's good advice, I have also been trying to envision about 6 key scenes. That's it so far.

Will do. I'll update my name and such as well. As many things as one has to sign up for these days, I've gotten in the habit of dropping minimal information in.

Funding Strategy / Web Strategy

Posted on January 23, 2016 at 3:29pm 0 Comments

I wanted to get this topic addressed early on because one of the first questions anyone asks about a movie project is "where will the money come from?" The purpose of this site is to promote filmmakers and their projects, but we do not want members to pester each other for funding.

Funding is essential, and there will be ways MAF can help you raise funds - by hosting a fundraising party, for example - and by setting up your project for a crowdsale, or by showing you how to use…

A Logo with a Purpose

Posted on December 18, 2015 at 1:30am 0 Comments

Highway 29's original logo is still my favorite. It represents the "bullets" filmmakers get hit with. I can't say I've ever been shot at but I've thought my career was dead, even dead and buried, more than a few times.

I've always known that filmmaking was hard, ever since I made a few films in "film school" at UNC-Chapel HIll. Back then, the shooting wasn't so difficult, but editing actual film on a Moviola and splicing it together with glue, creating A and…
